Effect of Nutrient Dynamics on Organic Contaminant Fate in Rivers: a Microcosm Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
• Including biofilm processes in the organic contaminant fate model in rivers is very important, especially in shallow rivers. • The nutrient load dynamics can affect the fate of organic contaminants, and thus including nutrients in the organic contaminant fate modelling is necessary. • The sensitivity of LAS degradation to the ammonia nitrogen is an interesting finding and can induce further research in order to investigate the mechanism. Integrated modelling of eutrophication and organic contaminant fate in rivers
Eutrophication and contamination by toxic organic pollutants are the major problems in water quality management. Despite the fact that both problems have been subjected to extensive research and modelling, they have traditionally been treated separately. Because the models used are single-issue models, many interactions between nutrient cycles and organic contaminant fate and effect are missed....
متن کاملGroundwater and Contaminant Hydrology
Contaminant hydrology is the study of processes that affect both ground and surface water pollution. It draws on the principles of hydrology and chemistry. Contaminant hydrology and water quality research seeks to understand the role of soil properties and hydrologic processes on ground and surface water pollution and develop strategies to mitigate their impacts. Research is done at all scales ...
متن کاملBenthic algae stimulate leaf litter decomposition in detritus-based headwater streams: a case of aquatic priming effect?
In detritus-based ecosystems, autochthonous primary production contributes very little to the detritus pool. Yet primary producers may still influence the functioning of these ecosystems through complex interactions with decomposers and detritivores. Recent studies have suggested that, in aquatic systems, small amounts of labile carbon (C) (e.g., producer exudates), could increase the mineraliz...
متن کاملWater Quality Modeling and Evaluation of Nutrient Control Strategies Using QUAL2K in the Small Rivers
Background: Qual2k is a stream water quality model and was used to evaluate the water quality of the Kine-Vars River and assess the response of the river to nutrient management strategies. Methods: For that purpose, 7 sample stations were selected and surface water samples were collected in the winter and summer of 2012 and were analyzed for temperature, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen dem...
متن کاملEffect of Co-existing Heavy Metals and Natural Organic Matter on Sorption/Desorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil: A Review
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), abundant in mixed contaminant sites, often coexist with heavy metals. The fate and remediation of PAHs depend heavily on the sorption and desorption behavior of these contaminants. The sorption behavior can in turn be highly affected by certain soil components and properties, such as soil organic matter (SOM) and the presence of heavy metals. Through rev...
